I am pleased to announce that Dr. Warren Kibbe has accepted my offer to serve as the Director of the NCI Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology (CBIIT) after a rigorous international search.
Dr. Kibbe currently leads the informatics program at Northwestern University (NU), where he has been the driving force behind the development of the informatics infrastructure for clinical research. He is currently Professor of Health and Biomedical Informatics at NU, with appointments as Director of Cancer Informatics, CIO of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Associate Director of the Northwestern University Biomedical Informatics Center (NUBIC).
Warren has extensive experience in the development of cancer informatics software, having led the development of the Patient Study Calendar (PSC) and the Human Disease Ontology. His research has produced several novel open-source software tools that have been adopted by NCI-designated Cancer Centers and other academic medical centers around the country. In 2012, he was selected one of the Top 25 Healthcare CIOs by InformationWeek Healthcare.
Thanks to his familiarity with NCI’s past efforts in informatics, Warren has a balanced view of the needs and expectations in this rapidly expanding domain. While he will not be assuming his new position here until October 1, he will be visiting the NCI over the summer to begin the transition process.
I look forward to working with Warren and I urge you to give him your full support as we expand biomedical informatics capabilities for the cancer research community and information technology support to NCI staff.
